Was blessed with excellent anticipation, hands and the ability to adjust to throws. Was very athletic and made tough catches look easy. Knew how to beat his man and had a lot of nice moves after the catch. Was very quick. Injuries were a major issue with him, since he was not overly big. While he had good speed, he was not a regular threat to beat defenders purely with his speed (nor was he a big target who out-muscled bigger defensive backs).
