Beathard is expected to compete with Mac Jones -- who is slated to be traded from the Patriots to the Jaguars -- to be Trevor Lawrence's top backup in 2024, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Beathard appeared in seven games this season and completed 40 of 53 passes for 349 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. He also carried eight times for 35 yards.
Possessses a strong arm and can make most of the throws he needs to as a pro. A confident leader on the field and off it, and is a gritty competitor who can overcome adversity. Has enough explosiveness to power up and punch the ball in when running for short yardage. Needs to show he can be consistently accurate with his pass offerings. Takes too many sacks, and has a tough time getting out of trouble as a scrambler. Not ideally-sized in height for the NFL passing pocket, and doesn't have a lot of muscle mass (adding to questions about durability).
Long Range Potential: Solid quarterback with some starter tools.
