A consummate playmaker, he had an uncanny knack for reading plays and owned tremendous range. Had great instincts for picking off passes. Hit like a truck. Could line up equally well in the box or in center field. Became increasingly injury-prone due to his all-out, gung-ho style of play. Was so aggressive, and had such a high motor that he sometimes committed too early for the big hit, which caused him to miss routine tackles at times.
