SANTANA SENT TO SEATTLE

The Seattle Mariners acquired designated hitter/first baseman Carlos Santana and cash from the Kansas City Royals for pitchers Wyatt Mills and William Fleming.

What does it give the Seattle Mariners
The Mariners currently have injuries to both first baseman Ty France and outfielder Kyle Lewis (who was seeing time at designated hitter before suffering a concussion). So, Santana will fill in at either position as a short-term stopgap measure. The Mariners also received cash to cover part of Santana's 2022 salary.

What does it give the Kansas City Royals
The Royals paid Seattle to take Santana off their hands, since they are excited about the first base position within the organization. Vinnie Pasquantino will get first crack at replacing Santana at first base, with Nick Pratto also down the prospect pipeline. Mills will report to Triple-A ball. He is a journeyman reliever.

Fantasy impact
Santana needs to get hot with the bat quickly in order to ensure quality at-bats for the rest of the season in Seattle. He is a very risky fantasy option at present with both France and Lewis due back soon. Mills has no fantasy value while Fleming is a tad old for a long-range prospect, but he is not without some upside.
