MATON MOVED TO THE METS
The New York Mets acquired pitcher Phil Maton from the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
What does it give the New York Mets
The Mets bullpen has really struggled this season amidst their push for a wild card spot. In Maton, they get a reliever who has regressed a bit this season with the Rays (compared to his previous three seasons with Houston). The Mets will be looking for Maton to return to form and pitch in late-game situations to help fortify the setup role in their quest for the playoffs. If they do get there, Maton has been lights out when in the postseason.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
This is the second trade the Rays have made recently to move out a veteran arm and create opportunity for someone from the minors. The Rays have fallen 5.5 games back of a wild card spot, and even further away from the American League East division title. Therefore, these moves could hint at the Rays being sellers at this year's MLB trade deadline. Then again, it seems Tampa Bay is always a seller–no matter what.
Fantasy impact
If Maton can become the Mets' primary setup man, he could really increase his value down the stretch this season. The holds and strikeouts he could deliver to a fantasy roster means he could be a sneaky mid-season addition for many fantasy teams.
