AUSTIN SHENTON SENT TO SEATTLE
The Seattle Mariners acquired infielder Austin Shenton from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners
The M's add a power-hitting infielder who has shown promise in the minors. Originally drafted by Seattle in 2019, Shenton hit 20 home runs in just 83 games at Triple-A last season. He even earned his first MLB stint, so he may compete with Luke Raley and Tyler Locklear at first base this spring,
What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
Seemingly, the Rays did not see a path to Major League Baseball playing time for Shenton, so they designated him for assignment shortly before this trade. The return here is merely cash, which should help Tampa Bay improve the roster with other acquisitions this off-season.
Fantasy impact
At 26 years old, Shenton is no longer much of a prospect, nor is he on the fantasy radar. Still, if he makes the Opening Day roster, his recent home-run power in the minors could make him worth a flier in deeper leagues.
