ANDRES GIMENEZ TRADED TO TORONTO

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired infielder Andres Gimenez and pitcher Nick Sandlin from the Cleveland Guardians for infielder Spencer Horwitz and outfielder Nick Mitchell.

What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays
With this trade, the Blue Jays are prioritizing defense and pitching. Gimenez is one of the best defensive infielders in baseball. He is also a stolen base threat, though his impact at the plate has declined the last few seasons. Still, his glove and speed make him a very useful addition, and those are assets that Horwitz lacked. Meanwhile, Sandlin should fill a key role in Toronto's bullpen, which was lacking quality high-leverage relievers. In both of the last two seasons, Sandlin pitched in over 60 games with an ERA of 3.75 while striking out over a batter per inning.

What does it give the Cleveland Guardians
This trade looks like a salary dump for the Guardians, who get out of the last five years on Gimenez' contract. Horwitz was not in their plans, as they immediately traded him to the Pirates in a separate deal for pitching depth. But here, Cleveland also picked up Mitchell, an outfielder who Toronto drafted in the fourth round last year. The 21-year-old had a successful season at Single-A ball, and will continue developing in the Guardians' organization. It is an underwhelming return, as the Guardians subtract two important players from their competitive roster without directly replacing them.

Fantasy impact
Gimenez may hit lower in Toronto's order, which would reduce his fantasy value. He should play every day, steal 20-30 bases and hit for a decent average. Just do not overrate him. On the other hand, Sandlin gets a small boost. He should be a good source of holds and could take on a larger late-inning role in Toronto. Mitchell is a few years away from helping fantasy rosters, but he has pretty good upside.
