CUBS TRADE FOR KYLE TUCKER!
The Chicago Cubs acquired outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros for infielders Isaac Paredes and Cam Smith, and pitcher Hayden Wesneski.
What does it give the Chicago Cubs
Tucker provides the Cubs with a legitimate star in the outfield. The 27-year-old is a premier power-speed threat, routinely putting up close to 30 home runs and 30 steals per season. He should play in right field and hit in the middle of Chicago's order. Tucker, who becomes a free agent after this season, is a clear upgrade on Cody Bellinger, the Cubs' right-fielder for much of last season. Expect Bellinger to be traded soon after this move. Tucker should give Chicago's offense a much-needed boost in 2025. These two teams are no longer in the same division (or league), which makes this deal easier to make.
What does it give the Houston Astros
The Astros are retooling this off-season. Losing Tucker will no doubt hurt their chances this year, but the addition of Paredes gives them another younger impact hitter (with several more years of team control). The 25-year-old has been good for 20-30 home runs, and could take over at third base if Alex Bregman doesn't re-sign. Likewise, Wesneski should fill an important role on the pitching staff, as either a starter or reliever. The right-hander has pitched effectively in both roles with the Cubs the past two seasons. Smith, the 14th overall pick in 2024, is a top hitting prospect who could make a rapid rise to MLB.
Fantasy impact
Tucker remains one of the top outfielders in fantasy baseball after this trade. He did miss some time with an injury in 2024, but his 23 homers and 11 steals in just 78 games signal he could reach new heights this year. Paredes should also get a boost, after struggling with the Cubs last season. The move to Daikin Park (the former Minute Maid Park) should benefit the powerful right-handed slugger. So far, Wesneski has not had a lot of fantasy value. Wait and see if the Astros deploy him in the rotation or possibly a high-leverage bullpen role. And Smith is likely a few years away from being a factor in fantasy leagues, but his progress in Houston's organization could be worth monitoring.
