ENMANUEL VALDEZ TO PITTSBURGH
The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired infielder Enmanuel Valdez from the Boston Red Sox for pitcher Joe Vogatsky.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
Valdez adds some versatility to Pittsburgh's infield. The 25-year-old can play multiple positions and is a left-handed hitter, unlike most of their other infielders. Valdez did hit for power in the minors, though that has not translated to MLB yet. He slashed .235/.286/.400 with 12 home runs in parts of two seasons with the Red Sox. Expect him to challenge for an everyday role with the Pirates in spring training.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox will probably have a more crowded infield this upcoming season, so Valdez was clearly the odd man out. He was designated for assignment before this trade, so they at least got back a future asset. Boston will take a chance on Vogatsky, a right-handed pitcher who is just starting his professional career. He was a 19th-round draft pick of the Pirates earlier this year.
Fantasy impact
Valdez will likely see more playing time now in Pittsburgh. He could generate some fantasy interest if he can hit for power more consistently. In deeper leagues, that could make him worth a late flier on draft day. Otherwise, wait and see how he starts the year. Vogatsky is a long way from fantasy relevance.
