COOK TO OKLAHOMA
The Oklahoma City Thunder acquired guard Daequan Cook and a first-round draft pick in 2010, no. 18 overall from the Miami Heat for a second-round draft pick in 2010, no. 32 overall.
What does it give the Oklahoma City Thunder
This is yet another cagey move by GM Sam Presti for the young and rising Thunder. Cook is still a talented young outside shooter who can play a needed perimeter role off the bench for Oklahoma City (a team that made only 418 treys last season, sixth-least in the NBA). Meanwhile the pick gives the Thunder three first-rounders in this year's draft, setting them up nicely to move up the first round (if they can pull off another deal). They could use another quality big-man (which this year's draft is loaded with) so don't be surprised if Presti and the Thunder jump up into the lottery.
What does it give the Miami Heat
Sending Cook's contract to Oklahoma City (along with the contract they would have been required to give the first-rounder) saves the Heat roughly $3 Million. So really, all the Heat do here is clear up cap space, which is not thrilling for their fans, but is important for next season and beyond. Cook's three-point accuracy really fell off last season and his role shrunk, so he was a fairly logical candidate to be moved.
