MAC JONES NOW A JAGUAR
The Jacksonville Jaguars acquired quarterback Mac Jones from the New England Patriots for a sixth-round draft pick in 2024 (No. 192 overall).
What does it give the Jacksonville Jaguars
Jones heads home to Jacksonville where he will now become the backup to Trevor Lawrence. This should give him a chance to rediscover his game after he struggled mightily in New England the past few seasons. He will likely never become the starter, but if the Jags can help him find the ability that made him a first-round pick (2021), they could recoup a higher asset than they gave up in future years.
What does it give the New England Patriots
It has long been rumored that the Patriots are going to take a quarterback with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. This move all but guarantees that will happen now. The Patriots have to take some blame for how they handled Jones' development, and must now change so that they do not make the same mistake with the incoming rookie quarterback. Veteran Jacoby Brissett was also brought in to help out.
Fantasy impact
Jones will lose any fantasy value he did have now that he is a full-time backup in Jacksonville. On the other hand, the Patriots rookie quarterback (or Brissett) now have a clearer path to playing time. Brissett might actually have sneaky, short-term value in some leagues next season.
