ZA'DARIUS SMITH SENT TO DETROIT
The Detroit Lions acquired defensive end/linebacker Za'Darius Smith and a seventh-round draft pick in 2026 from the Cleveland Browns for a fifth-round draft pick in 2025 and a sixth-round draft pick in 2026.
What does it give the Detroit Lions
The Lions are one of the best teams in the NFL this season, but one of their best players is currently missing: edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson. Enter Smith, who should slide into Hutchinson's position on the edge and provide Detroit with solid production.
What does it give the Cleveland Browns
The Browns did well here to get a fifth-round draft pick in next year's draft, plus a one-round upgrade in the following selection process in 2026. Smith is a good player but the Browns are not going anywhere this season. So it is time for a clearance sale.
Fantasy impact
Look for Smith to continue to harass quarterbacks this season, but he might not get as many sacks in Detroit. In Cleveland, he was rushing the passer opposite Myles Garrett. In Detroit, he will be the main man unless/until Hutchinson returns to action (unlikely for 2024). So, do not overrate Smith if available in some fantasy formats.
