REID'S CHIEFS NAB QB SMITH FROM NINERS
The Kansas City Chiefs acquired quarterback Alex Smith from the San Francisco 49ers for a second-round draft pick in 2013 and a conditional third-round draft pick in 2014.
What does it give the Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs are entering a new era under recently-hired head coach Andy Reid, and Reid's teams are usually defined by a West Coast-style offense. Enter Smith, a quarterback who quietly broke out for the 49ers last season (with a 104.1 passer rating) before getting ousted from his starting gig by emerging star QB {P Colin Kaepernick}. While not nearly as mobile as Kaepernick, Smith's growing efficiency should be a great fit for Reid's short-pass system right away (and should make the Chiefs more competitive immediately). Expect KC to sign Smith to an extension as soon as the deal can be made official by the NFL.
What does it give the San Francisco 49ers
With Smith gone and the exciting Kaepernick in place, the defending NFC champs from San Francisco can now move forward free from quarterback controversies. The second-round pick should help them add a quality player who should be able to help out right away, and by moving Smith's contract (which has one season for $7.5 million left on it) they get a lot of financial flexibility, which should mean adding even more helpful depth players.
Fantasy impact
Smith's move to the Chiefs clearly means {P Matt Cassel}'s days in KC are over, but we'll see what happens with the disappointing {P Brady Quinn} (who didn't do much with the opportunities afforded him this past season, but might be a nice fit as a backup in the short-pass offense). If {P Dwayne Bowe} sticks around he gets a nice upgrade thanks to this deal, but that remains to be seen. No San Fran players are likely affected much by the move (since Smith wasn't playing in recent months) but backup QB {P Scott Tolzien} probably gets a minor long-range boost, as he's now Kaepernick's primary insurance policy.
