TROUBA TRADED TO THE RANGERS
The New York Rangers acquired defenseman Jacob Trouba from the Winnipeg Jets for defenseman Neal Pionk and a first-round draft pick in 2019 (No. 20 overall).
What does it give the New York Rangers
The Rangers landed one of the prized restricted free agents on this year's market in Trouba, a shutdown defender who can also provide solid offensive numbers. He will probably be entrenched as New York's new No. 1 defenseman and see upwards of 24 minutes of ice time per game for his new squad. Now, the Blueshirts must re-sign the 25-year-old blueliner.
What does it give the Winnipeg Jets
The Jets were never going to re-sign Trouba, who had expressed a desire to play elsewhere long ago. So, they moved him for Pionk (a decent, all-around defenseman who is a clear downgrade from Trouba) and a first-rounder that originally belonged to them (the 20th overall selection was sent to the Rangers in the Kevin Hayes deal). Could Winnipeg have gotten more in return for Trouba?
Fantasy impact
Trouba may not see as much time on the power play in New York, who boast the likes of Tony DeAngelo, rookie Adam Fox, Brady Skjei and veteran Kevin Shattenkirk. So, do not expect another 50-point campaign from Trouba in 2019-20. Pionk's status remains largely unchanged. He should see some special teams minutes but will be behind Dustin Byfuglien (among others) on the power play pecking order.
