RANGERS REEL IN REILLY SMITH

The New York Rangers acquired winger Reilly Smith from the Pittsburgh Penguins for a conditional fifth-round draft pick in 2025 and a second-round draft pick in 2027.

What does it give the New York Rangers
Smith is a great complementary forward on a Stanley Cup-contending team. He will be just that on a Rangers team hoping to march deeper into the playoffs next season. His two-way game will fit on any of the Rangers' top three lines. Getting him on a retained salary leaves them space to make other additions.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Penguins
The Penguins continue to make trades to acquire draft picks. They moved out a player who looked unhappy in Pittsburgh, especially after missing the playoffs. The two picks will help continue to restock a weak prospect pool. The Penguins will retain 25 percent of Smith's salary as a pending UFA in 2025.

Fantasy impact
Expect a bounce-back season to career norms from Smith in 2024-25. He should be rejuvenated on a team that will be competing for the Metro Division crown, and expected to go on a playoff run. Grab him as a late-round gem.
