MARLINS ADD DAN STRAILY TO THE ROTATION
The Miami Marlins acquired pitcher Dan Straily from the Cincinnati Reds for pitchers Luis Castillo and Austin Brice, plus outfielder Isaiah White.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
The Marlins are still trying to replace the late Jose Fernandez, whose stunning death late in 2016 shocked the entire organization. Adding Straily should help, especially since he is coming off a strong '16 campaign in Cincinnati. The 28-year-old right-hander figures to start out as one of Miami's top three starters, along with Edinson Volquez and Wei-Yin Chen. Straily is a solid addition to the staff.
What does it give the Cincinnati Reds
Castillo is a top pitching prospect, so adding him to the Reds' stables was a major coup for the organization. He will probably start out in AA ball but may see time in the bigs in 2017. Brice has some upside as either a starter or reliever but could begin this season pitching out of the Cincinnati 'pen. White has good long-range upside due to his speed and ability to play solid defense in center field.
Fantasy impact
Straily could have better run support playing for a contender in Miami this season, and he is also moving to a more pitcher-friendly ball park. Therefore, his fantasy value should see a spike in 2017. Castillo remains a top keeper-league prospect, while Brice is a long-shot candidate for saves out of the Cincinnati bullpen this season. White is a long-range fantasy prospect with stolen-base potential (if nothing else).
