REDS ACQUIRE RP MARSHALL
The Cincinnati Reds acquired pitcher Sean Marshall from the Chicago Cubs for pitcher Travis Wood, outfielder Dave Sappelt and infielder Ronald Torreyes.
What does it give the Cincinnati Reds
Marshall is coming off a tremendous 2011 campaign as the setup man to Carlos Marmol in Chicago. Despite his gaudy stats, and the fact Cincy dealt three young players in return for his services, he's not expected to take over closer duties with the Reds in 2012. Instead, he's expected to remain one of the premier setup men in the business…this time for the NL Central Reds, not the Cubs.
What does it give the Chicago Cubs
Wood is a pretty solid prospect, so he has a pretty good shot at cracking the Cubs' rotation in 2012. He did so for Cincinnati last season and didn't look out of place. Sappelt is a good fourth-outfielder prospect for Chicago, while Torreyes is a long-range option (possibly at third base) with intriguing upside. Overall, the Cubs got a great return for their stellar setup man in this deal.
