CUBS GO BIG, LAND WHITE SOX ACE QUINTANA
The Chicago Cubs acquired pitcher Jose Quintana from the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Eloy Jimenez, pitcher Dylan Cease, first baseman Matt Rose and infielder Bryant Flete.
What does it give the Chicago Cubs
Chicago has struggled with consistency all season long, which has been one of the surprises of the 2017 season. With two starters (John Lackey and Kyle Hendricks) currently on the disabled list, and the team's starting pitching a major disappointment overall, the Cubs decided to look across town for an upgrade. Quintana is a quality left-handed starter, but his addition alone might not be enough to get the Cubbies out of the doldrums.
What does it give the Chicago White Sox
This was quite a haul for the South Siders, which is how rival teams from the city of Chicago could get such a major trade done. In Jimenez, the Pale Hose add another big, power bat who could be the team's next left-fielder (eventually replacing veteran Melky Cabrera). He joins potential second baseman Yoan Moncada and potential first baseman Luis Robert as three huge cornerstone bats for the future. Cease is also an excellent prospect, and adds to Chicago's wealth of starting pitching prospects for the future. Rose is somewhat raw as a prospect, but with significant upside. Flete could be a utility infielder for the White Sox, eventually.
Fantasy impact
Quintana's value should increase in the National League on the other side of town, though he is not an elite fantasy pitcher. Jimenez probably has a much clearer path to MLB now that he is with the White Sox, so his fantasy value could skyrocket now. Cease remains a long-range fantasy stud, while Rose and Flete now belong on the radar (though neither are worthy of being picked up just yet).
