ARIZONA ADDS VET OF J.D. MARTINEZ
The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired outfielder J.D. Martinez from the Detroit Tigers for infielders Dawel Lugo, Sergio Alcantara and Jose King.
What does it give the Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks probably won't catch the Dodgers for first place in the National League West division this season, but they currently sit in second place ahead of the Colorado Rockies and in a Wild Card position. Therefore, they felt compelled to be buyers before this year's MLB non-waiver trade deadline (July 31). By acquiring veteran Martinez, Arizona upgrades one of their corner outfield positions (while Martinez played right field in Detroit, he is expected to play left field with the D'backs). Arizona had a surplus of good, young infielders so they were comfortable in sending three to the Tigers to complete this deal. A free agent after 2017, Martinez is quite likely a rental acquisition for the Snakes (but an important one). He may be used to protect superstar 1B Paul Goldschmidt in the lineup.
What does it give the Detroit Tigers
For the Tigers, this trade provides decent asset management because they were unlikely to re-sign Martinez with the team six games under .500 so far in 2017. Then again, the right-handed slugger will only turn 30 next month, so perhaps Detroit will look to bring him back this winter. In the meantime, the Tigers land three prospects who all began their pro careers at shortstop (but only one could remain there, long term). Lugo is a converted shortstop who now mans the hot corner. He is a decent long-range prospect who might make Nicholas Castellanos expendable (or force a position switch), eventually. Alcantara is a good glove man who should remain at shortstop, though there are questions about his bat. King is a long, long-range prospect who will likely outgrow shortstop. He is several years away.
