DIAMONDBACKS, TWINS SWAP PROSPECTS
The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired catcher John Ryan Murphy from the Minnesota Twins for pitcher Gabriel Moya.
What does it give the Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks currently roster three catchers in Chris Iannetta, Jeff Mathis and Chris Herrmann, so Murphy is merely a depth acquisition at this time. Murphy is still young enough (26) to emerge as a regular in MLB, though time is starting to run out on him. The Diamondbacks are his third organization.
What does it give the Minnesota Twins
In Moya, the Twins land a quality left-handed relief prospect who was enjoying an excellent campaign (43.2 IP, 0.82 ERA) at the Double-A level. He can strike a lot of batters out, which might get him to the big leagues by 2018. He may even be in line for closing duties down the road. A nice deal for Minnesota.
Fantasy impact
Neither Murphy nor Moya are expected to make a fantasy impact in 2017, but Moya has the better long-range upside. Murphy appears ticketed for backup duty in MLB, while Moya could emerge as a quality fantasy closer down the road.
