RAYS ADD SLUGGER DUDA FROM THE METS

The Tampa Bay Rays acquired DH/first baseman Lucas Duda from the New York Mets for pitcher Drew Smith.

What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays felt the need for another left-handed bat after losing outfielder Colby Rasmus (hip) for the rest of 2017, so Duda seems like a good fit. Corey Dickerson, who has played a lot as the Rays' DH this season, will probably replace Rasmus in left field most of the time (which opens up designated hitter duties for Duda). Look for the former Mets first baseman to platoon with veteran right-handed hitter Trevor Plouffe down the stretch.

What does it give the New York Mets
The Mets are not contenders this season, mostly because of injuries to their vaunted starting rotation. Therefore, the time to sell is now. Duda was to become a free agent this off-season, so New York decided to move him early. Wilmer Flores figures to replace Duda as the Mets' first baseman (for now), while prospect Dominic Smith continues to marinate in the minors. Meanwhile, Drew Smith is an intriguing bullpen prospect for the future.

Fantasy impact
Duda's fantasy stock should improve slightly for the short term with a move to the American League, though he is not expected to remain in Tampa Bay beyond 2017. Flores' stock should also improve with more playing time down the stretch, while Plouffe's stock should be hurt by Duda's arrival in Tampa Bay. Dominic Smith's long-range stock remains strong, though he might not be recalled by the Mets until September. Drew Smith should be on the fantasy radar as a long-range closer for the deepest of keeper leagues.
