WHITE SOX TRADE FOR SAN DIEGO'S RONDON

The Chicago White Sox acquired infielder Jose Rondon from the San Diego Padres for cash.

What does it give the Chicago White Sox
In Rondon, the Pale Hose land a solid infielder who has a chance to make the team out of spring training as a bench player. He can play shortstop, so he might become Tim Anderson's direct backup in Chicago. Rondon turns 24 in March, so there is still some time for him to break through in MLB.

What does it give the San Diego Padres
The Padres had designated Rondon for assignment recently, so they were willing to accept some cash in return for his services. Rondon did not play in the big leagues last season but made eight appearances (25 AB) with San Diego in 2016. However, the Pads have several better infield prospects.

Fantasy impact
Rondon must stick in the bigs before he begins to generate any fantasy interest in most leagues. Perhaps in the deepest of keeper leagues he might be an option if there is a shortage in depth infield options. Otherwise, take a wait-and-see approach with Rondon this year.
