CUBS CORRAL PITCHER CHAVEZ FROM TEXAS
The Chicago Cubs acquired pitcher Jesse Chavez from the Texas Rangers for pitcher Tyler Thomas.
What does it give the Chicago Cubs
The Cubs will appreciate the versatility in right-hander Chavez, especially since the team has had to utilize swingman Mike Montgomery exclusively as a starter since Yu Darvish went down to injury earlier this season. Expect Chavez to pitch in middle relief for Chicago (although he may also start if need be).
What does it give the Texas Rangers
In Thomas, the Rangers land a solid left-handed pitching prospect who was enjoying a strong first full season in the minors (3-5, 2.88 ERA, 58 hits, 14 BB, 81 K in 75 IP with South Bend in low Single-A ball). He is a strong addition in exchange for a reliever who turns 35 years old next month.
Fantasy impact
Chavez may not receive any save opportunities, and limited holds chances too. Therefore, his fantasy stock remains low in Chicago. As for Thomas, he is now radar-worthy as a candidate to join the Rangers' starting rotation at some point down the road.
