METS FLIP FAMILIA TO OAKLAND
The Oakland Athletics acquired pitcher Jeurys Familia from the New York Mets for pitcher Bobby Wahl, infielder Will Toffey and international bonus pool money om 2018-19.
What does it give the Oakland Athletics
For Oakland, adding Familia strengthens an already-solid bullpen. The now-former Mets closer is expected to be used in a setup role with the A's, pitching in front of Oakland closer Blake Treinen. Somewhat surprisingly, the A's are in the American League Wild Card hunt this year, so adding Familia should help the cause.
What does it give the New York Mets
For the Mets, this trade is about preparing for next season--a sad reality in a bitterly disappointing 2018 campaign. Wahl is a 26-year-old reliever who has been dominant at Triple-A Nashville this season. Wahl could emerge as a late-inning option at some point during the second half of '18. In Toffey, the Mets have also added a solid third base prospect. The 23-year-old Toffey has not played above high Single-A ball, so he is a bit of a long shot. The slot money should also come in handy for a Mets team that needs to revamp the entire organization.
Fantasy impact
Familia's save opportunities will likely be fewer in Oakland, but he remains a strong fantasy option in leagues that count the 'holds' stat category. Wahl could become part of New York's bullpen before the end of '18, so his stock is rising too. As for Toffey, he needs to start making a move up the ladder with his new team. He is no more than a fantasy dart throw.
