ATHLETICS ADD ANOTHER RELIEVER IN RODNEY

The Oakland Athletics acquired pitcher Fernando Rodney from the Minnesota Twins for pitcher Dakota Chalmers.

What does it give the Oakland Athletics
In Rodney, the A's add yet another late-inning reliever capable of closing in MLB, following recent acquisitions Jeurys Familia and Shawn Kelley. Like the previous two additions, look for Rodney to be used in a setup role in front of Oakland closer Blake Treinen.

What does it give the Minnesota Twins
The Twins did well here to deal away their aging closer (Rodney is now 41 years old!) for a 21-year-old arm with some promise. Chalmers has struggled in the low minors and has also dealt with injury, but he does have MLB upside. This was a good deal for Minnesota.

Fantasy impact
Rodney's save opportunities have all but disappeared now that he is with Oakland, and he may even struggle to land consistent hold chances. As for Minnesota's new closer, that role should go to Addison Reed (a former MLB closer). Reed's stock is therefore on the rise. For now, Chalmers does not have keeper value but he might be radar-worthy one year from now.
