PIRATES FLIP FREESE TO LA

The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired infielder David Freese from the Pittsburgh Pirates for infielder Jesus Valdez.

What does it give the Los Angeles Dodgers
Freese could become a difference-maker for the Dodgers down the stretch (and, potentially, in the postseason). He will serve as third base insurance for Justin Turner, and may also be used in a platoon at first base with Max Muncy. Furthermore, he is a quality, experienced bat off the bench.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
In Valdez, the Pirates land a very raw but talented middle infielder with loads of upside. His acquisition is also an admission of defeat in some ways by Pittsburgh, who were hoping to sneak into the playoffs this year. Alas, they did well to get a talented prospect in exchange for veteran Freese.

Fantasy impact
Freese was not playing every day in Pittsburgh this year, so his role will probably be unchanged (and so his fantasy value likely remains stagnant, too). Valdez should be on the fantasy radar as a long-range keeper prospect with a lot of upside. Patience is needed with him, though.
