MARINERS MAKE ANOTHER SPLASH

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired shortstop Jean Segura and pitchers Juan Nicasio and James Pazos from the Seattle Mariners for first baseman Carlos Santana and infielder J.P. Crawford.

What does it give the Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies killed two birds with one stone in this deal: they added an offensive upgrade at the shortstop position in Segura (who may hit first or second in the batting order in 2019), and they also shed Santana's contract. Philadelphia wants to keep Rhys Hoskins at first base moving forward, so Santana became expendable. Both Nicasio and Pazos should be serviceable relievers for the Phils, as well.

What does it give the Seattle Mariners
Seattle continues its roster makeover here. Crawford will likely replace Segura as the Mariners' starting shortstop. He is a clear downgrade with the bat but also a definite upgrade defensively. Santana could give Seattle's offense a major boost at either first base or as Nelson Cruz's replacement at designated hitter. However, the M's may shop him around this off-season as well.

Fantasy impact
Segura should continue his hitting ways as a member of the Phillies and, with a stronger cast around him, may be even better in 2019. He should be one of the top shortstops selected in most non-keeper drafts, and also a possible keeper in deeper leagues. Santana's status is unclear, so for the time being he is a risky fantasy play. His value would diminish if he remained with the Mariners. Crawford's bat has been woeful so far in 187 at-bats in MLB, but he is still only 23 (he turns 24 next month) and was the 16th overall pick in the 2013 MLB draft. Consider him a fantasy dark horse shortstop for '19. Both Nicasio and Pazos may be a decent source for holds next season, but their prospects for closing games are not great.
