TANNER ROARK FOR TANNER RAINEY
The Cincinnati Reds acquired pitcher Tanner Roark from the Washington Nationals for pitcher Tanner Rainey.
What does it give the Cincinnati Reds
In Roark, the Reds add a veteran right-hander capable of giving the rotation solid innings. He is not a dominant starter but can be relied upon when handed the ball every fifth day. The 32-year-old Roark is a virtual lock for a spot in Cincinnati's 2019 rotation.
What does it give the Washington Nationals
Like Roark, Rainey was not very good at the big-league level last season but he has a big arm and some upside as a reliever. The Nationals have had some success with power arms, so Rainey may be the latest addition to that group. Washington is still looking for more pitching.
Fantasy impact
Roark is not a keeper but can be a decent late-round draft pick in some leagues because of his durability. His value takes a small dip, however, moving from D.C. to the Queen City. As for Rainey, he may have some fantasy value if he carves out an important role for himself in the Nationals' bullpen in 2019. However, that is not a given. Take a wait-and-see approach with Rainey at the start of the '19 MLB campaign.
