KENDALL TO THE CUBS

The Chicago Cubs acquired catcher Jason Kendall and cash from the Oakland Athletics for catcher Rob Bowen and pitcher Jerry Blevins.

What does it give the Chicago Cubs
The Cubs hope veteran Kendall can solidify the catching position, which has been in a state of flux since the club dealt Michael Barrett to San Diego and Henry Blanco went on the disabled list. Kendall isn't much of a hitter anymore, but he is among the Majors' best handlers of a pitching staff.

What does it give the Oakland Athletics
In making this move, the A's are promoting rookie catcher Kurt Suzuki to the starter's role. He'll probably out-hit Kendall from now until season's end, but may struggle a little to handle Oakland's staff. Bowen will back him up, while veteran Mike Piazza could be back soon to provide more depth behind the plate. Blevins is an intriguing prospect in relief.
