HOLLIDAY TO ST. LOUIS

The St. Louis Cardinals acquired outfielder Matt Holliday from the Oakland Athletics for third baseman Brett Wallace, pitcher Clayton Mortensen and outfielder Shane Peterson.

What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals
Holliday gives the Cardinals the batting-order protection for superstar Albert Pujols that they've been lacking. He'll take over the left-field duties from Rick Ankiel, who will probably wind up back on the bench. Holliday's a free agent after 2009, so this is clearly a win-now deal for the Cards.

What does it give the Oakland Athletics
Wallace is the key to the trade for Oakland, since he could be the heir apparent to Eric Chavez at the hot corner. Wallace's bat may already be major-league ready, but he needs more work on his defense. He could see time as a DH later this year. Mortensen and Peterson add to Oakland's prospect pool.
