PATTERSON TO THE RED SOX
The Boston Red Sox acquired infielder/outfielder Eric Patterson from the Oakland Athletics for pitcher Fabian Williamson.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox
Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia recently suffered a broken foot, so the Red Sox obviously need to add some organizational depth at second base for the next little while. Enter speedy Patterson, a versatile player who can also help out in Boston's injury-ravaged outfield. He hasn't quite panned out as expected in the majors, and is off to a slow start this season, but Patterson has some solid tools and a change of scenery might do him some good.
What does it give the Oakland Athletics
Oakland's acquisitions this year of Adam Rosales and Conor Jackson made Patterson expendable, and his lack of production didn't help his cause. Williamson has some strikeout ability but hasn't been quite as impressive this season in Single-A ball as he was last season. Still, he's very young and the A's obviously see potential in the lefty.
