PIRELA TO PHILADELPHIA

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired infielder/outfielder Jose Pirela from the San Diego Padres for cash.

What does it give the Philadelphia Phillies
In Pirela, the Phillies get a versatile hitter who can fill a utility role at the highest level. He can play effectively at second base as well as all three outfield positions, which adds value. For the time being, he will be sent to Triple-A Lehigh Valley but Pirela should resurface in MLB at some point this season.

What does it give the San Diego Padres
The Padres decided recently to designate Pirela for assignment, so it comes as no surprise that they managed to trade him for a little cash in return. Pirela played mostly in the outfield for San Diego in recent times, largely because of the arrival of Ian Kinsler, Greg Garcia and Luis Arias.

Fantasy impact
There may not be enough of a role for Pirela in Philadelphia for him to regain meaningful fantasy value, but keep an eye on him. If he gets hot in the minors, he might get a quick look.
