ROMO REELED IN BY MINNESOTA
The Minnesota Twins acquired pitchers Sergio Romo and Chris Vallimont and a player to be named later from the Miami Marlins for first baseman Lewin Diaz.
What does it give the Minnesota Twins
In Romo, the Twins get a solid reliever who has accumulated 17 saves so far in 2019 (despite being 36 years old and pitching for a bad Marlins club). He may get save opportunities in Minnesota, as well. As for Vallimont, the Twins land a 22-year-old right-hander currently pitching in high Single-A ball. He is a decent prospect with size and projection. Minny will also receive a future asset in this trade.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
The Marlins are going nowhere this season and have placed all their stock (and faith) in a long-range rebuilding plan. Therefore, it makes sense that they acquired Diaz for three players here. After all, the 22-year-old first baseman was enjoying a breakout minor-league season in '19 at two levels. Furthermore, Miami needed a first baseman of the future and Diaz checks all the boxes. This is a good move for both teams.
Fantasy impact
The big winner in this deal appears to be Diaz, whose path to MLB should be easier and quicker as a member of the Marlins. In fact, do not be surprised to see Diaz in the big leagues next season. Romo's fantasy stock is dependent on his usage with the Twins moving forward. If he is used in the ninth inning, his value will move up significantly. If he is used to merely help out the bullpen in the later innings, without necessarily serving as the closer, his stock could plummet. Vallimont has some keeper appeal but that is all for now.
