SOGARD SENT TO THE RAYS
The Tampa Bay Rays acquired infielder Eric Sogard from the Toronto Blue Jays for two players to be named later.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
With several infielders currently injured in Tampa Bay (Yandy Diaz, Brandon Lowe and Daniel Robertson), the contending Rays felt the need to add more depth. Enter Sogard, a veteran utility infielder enjoying a career season in 2019. The 33-year-old will probably play several different positions in Tampa Bay and provide both leadership and a steady bat.
What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays
It remains to be seen what Toronto received in exchange for one of their best hitters in '19, but at least one of the two players to be named later should be a solid prospect. Since the Rays boast arguably the best farm system in all of baseball these days, it certainly made sense for the Blue Jays to deal Sogard within the American League East division at this time.
Fantasy impact
Sogard was used a lot by Toronto this season, and he earned at-bats as the team's main designated hitter (filling in at various other positions) throughout '19. He may not play as much down the stretch with Tampa Bay, especially when the likes of Diaz and Lowe return from injury. Therefore, proceed with caution here. Sogard could be an ideal sell-high candidate in several fantasy leagues right now.
