TEXAS TRADES FOR RELIEVER JONES

The Texas Rangers acquired pitcher Nate Jones, international bonus pool money in 2019-20 and cash from the Chicago White Sox for pitchers Joseph Jarneski and Ray Castro.

What does it give the Texas Rangers
This is an interesting trade between two non-contending AL teams. The 33-year-old Jones underwent elbow surgery earlier this season, so he will not be available to Texas before some time next year. The Rangers inherit two team options on Jones' contract for 2020 and 2021, so they clearly have plans for him as soon as he returns to action. The Rangers also added more money for their future international signings, as well as a little cash to help pay for the option years of Jones' contract.

What does it give the Chicago White Sox
The White Sox did very well here, adding two young pitchers for an injured veteran reliever and some money. Jarneski is still only 19 years old and currently pitching in Rookie ball as a reliever. Meanwhile, the 22-year-old Castro has pitched exclusively in Rookie ball for the Rangers since 2016 but has made seven starts so far in 2019. Neither is considered a top prospect but Chicago essentially received two future assets for nothing here, as Jones was obviously rather expendable.

Fantasy impact
There is very little fantasy impact here, as neither Jarneski nor Castro are even radar-worthy in keeper leagues at this point. As for Jones, he might become a factor late in 2020 but the Rangers would have to be contenders for him to have solid value as a possible closer or setup man.
