STEPHEN TARPLEY TO THE MARLINS
The Miami Marlins acquired pitcher Stephen Tarpley from the New York Yankees for infielder James Nelson.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
Tarpley could become a solid acquisition for the Marlins. He is a classic case of an untapped arm with plenty of projection but not enough MLB production (yet). He is still young enough (26), and has the stuff and strikeout ability to become an impact reliever. He just needs to put it all together with Miami.
What does it give the New York Yankees
The Yankees decided to give up on Tarpley recently, designating him for assignment. So, they did well to get back a future asset in Nelson. The 22-year-old third baseman displays great athleticism and projection, but he has yet to conquer the minor leagues with his bat. Perhaps he will as a Yankee.
Fantasy impact
Tarpley might become an important member of the Marlins bullpen at some point in 2020, so he should be on the in-season pickup radar in most deep fantasy leagues. Nelson needs to first prove he can hit with greater consistency in order to be taken seriously as a fantasy prospect down the road.
