ROYALS' ROSENTHAL SENT TO SAN DIEGO

The San Diego Padres acquired pitcher Trevor Rosenthal from the Kansas City Royals for outfielder Edward Olivares and a player to be named later.

What does it give the San Diego Padres
Veteran Rosenthal joins a Padres squad that has played well in 2020 (second place in the NL West, five games behind the Dodgers), despite a lot of injuries in their bullpen--most notably to veteran right Kirby Yates. Look for the 30-year-old Rosenthal to see the majority of save opportunities down the stretch for San Diego.

What does it give the Kansas City Royals
The Royals are once again mired in last place in the AL Central this year, so it is not a surprise that they decided to move their 2020 closer in Rosenthal for future assets. Olivares has some upside and is only 24 years old, so he might emerge as an everyday outfielder for Kansas City at some point.

Fantasy impact
Rosenthal is a nice short-term fix for fantasy leaguers with reliever issues. However, the closer role is rather finicky in the world of fantasy baseball, so do not overrate Rosenthal if he is available. Olivares has some fantasy upside, so he might be worth picking up for fantasy leaguers already playing for next year.
