PADRES PICK UP 1B MORELAND

The San Diego Padres acquired first baseman Mitch Moreland from the Boston Red Sox for outfielder Jeisson Rosario and infielder Hudson Potts.

What does it give the San Diego Padres
The Padres already have Eric Hosmer to play first base, so veteran Moreland will likely be used mostly as the designated hitter for the rest of this season. He will also spell Hosmer occasional at first. Veteran Moreland should help San Diego, especially in terms of playoff experience (should they get there).

What does it give the Boston Red Sox
With the Red Sox going nowhere this season, it was probably an easy decision to trade Moreland (who will soon turn 35 years old). Bobby Dalbec and Michael Chavis will handle first base for Boston with Moreland gone. Both Rosario and Potts are young, raw prospects, but they have some untapped upside.

Fantasy impact
Moreland should receive enough at-bats at the DH spot down the stretch to provide solid short-term fantasy value. Meanwhile, take a wait-and-see approach with both Rosario and Potts. They do not need to be picked up in deep keeper leagues right away, but keep an eye on them.
