JOSE MARTINEZ MOVES TO THE CUBS

The Chicago Cubs acquired outfielder Jose Martinez from the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named later (Pedro M. Martinez - 09/10/2020) and a player to be named later.

What does it give the Chicago Cubs
The Cubs have mostly used switch-hitting catcher Victor Caratini and righty catcher Willson Contreras at the DH spot this year, so Martinez gives them another option. The latter has struggled to hit this season but was very good in St. Louis prior to 2020. Martinez can also play first base and the corner outfield positions.

What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
For the Rays, this is a case of quickly moving on from a veteran player who did not deliver the goods for them this season. Tampa Bay has several other DH options even without Martinez, and they have plenty of lineup flexibility. This trade is also flexible, as they can add two future assets, only one or just accept cash.

Fantasy impact
Do not be surprised if Martinez becomes a key hitter for the Cubs down the stretch. If available, his track record with the Cardinals suggests he is worth picking up immediately.
