ANGELS JETTISON JASON CASTRO
The San Diego Padres acquired catcher Jason Castro from the Los Angeles Angels for pitcher Gerardo Reyes.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
By adding the left-hand-hitting Castro as well as righty Austin Nola (in another trade), the Padres have completely revamped their catching situation for the stretch run. San Diego was not getting much production out of younger receivers such as Austin Hedges and Francisco Mejia this year, which precipitated these moves.
What does it give the Los Angeles Angels
The Angels lose their starting catcher after this trade but the team is not contending in 2020. Therefore, it is time to look ahead to next year. Los Angeles will move forward with Max Stassi (currently on the IL) and Anthony Bemboom behind the plate. Reyes is a 27-year-old middle reliever with modest potential.
Fantasy impact
This move is not likely to amount to much from a fantasy standpoint, as Castro will have to share at-bats in San Diego with Nola (and possibly even Hedges and/or Mejia). Meanwhile, Reyes offers limited upside.
