PADRES LAND CATCHING DEPTH

The San Diego Padres acquired catcher David Ross from the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor-league infielder J.J. Furmaniak.

What does it give the San Diego Padres
The Padres recently learned that starting catcher Ramon Hernandez requires wrist surgery and will be out as much as six weeks. That's a tough loss behind the plate, so they acquired Ross to give them a little depth back there. He has a little pop but he's definitely not a long-term everyday option.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
The Bucs add to their extensive collection of infielders here. Nearly 26, Furmaniak is an aging prospect but has a little pop and is a decent defensive shortstop. He works hard and has good instincts, so he could make a big-league utility man one day.
