YANKS GRAB SLUGGER WILSON FOR CHACON

The New York Yankees acquired outfielder Craig Wilson from the Pittsburgh Pirates for pitcher Shawn Chacon.

What does it give the New York Yankees
The Yankees have now pretty much solved both holes in their outfield, first with the acquisition of Bobby Abreu, then by landing Wilson the next day. Wilson has been frustrated all year with his lack of playing time in Pittsburgh, so the trade to a contender where he'll surely play more (at least until September when injured outfielders return) could make his bat perk up even more. Not only does he give them some power, but also the versatility to play outfield or first base, not to mention serve as an emergency catcher.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
Just a few days beyond a year after acquiring him for the stretch drive, the Yanks have dealt Chacon away. This year, he didn't come close to resembling the pitcher he was during the second half and was recently banished to the bullpen. The Pirates will hope they can turn him around so he can lend a little veteran presence to the rotation, even though he's just 28.
