RANGERS REEL IN KIP WELLS

The Texas Rangers acquired pitcher Kip Wells from the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor-league pitcher Jesse Chavez.

What does it give the Texas Rangers
General Manager Jon Daniels said he was still looking for a pitcher after acquiring slugger Carlos Lee earlier in the week and he was true to his word with this deal. Wells, a big righty, is certainly no ace but he's a good guy to flush out the rotation in the fourth spot. He'll be a free agent at the end of the year, so he's merely a rental player, but nonetheless will be a big help in their quest for the AL West title.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
Nearly 23, Chavez is a wiry young righty who has made some strides this year at Double-A in his second full season as a reliever. Never considered a major prospect, he does have some potential as a late-inning reliever, but probably needs at least a half season at Triple-A.
