SANCHEZ FOR ALDERSON

The San Francisco Giants acquired second baseman Freddy Sanchez from the Pittsburgh Pirates for pitcher Tim Alderson.

What does it give the San Francisco Giants
Sanchez should bring some results to a long-hazy second-base situation for the Giants, who are still contending. His veteran bat will help boost one of the majors' most anemic attacks and he will likely hit near the top of the team's order.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates were trying to sign Sanchez to an extension but the player and team weren't very close in negotiations, so this is Pittsburgh moving on and saving some money in the process. For now, they have Ramon Vazquez and Delwyn Young to take over at second for the time being, but it's clear the Pirates are moving forward with a youth-heavy squad. Alderson was a first-round draft pick in 2007 and has stud potential, but the lanky right-hander is still only 20 years old so is a while away from making a splash in the majors.
