MARINERS TRADE YOUTH FOR SNELL, WILSON

The Seattle Mariners acquired pitcher Ian Snell and shortstop Jack Wilson from the Pittsburgh Pirates for catcher/first baseman Jeff Clement, infielder Ronny Cedeno and pitchers Aaron Pribanic, Brett Lorin and Nathan Adcock.

What does it give the Seattle Mariners
Despite his struggles of the past two seasons, Snell has one of the more live arms in the majors, and at 27 is just entering his prime. The Mariners are clearly hoping he will pan out at least as much as Oliver Perez did with the Mets when the Pirates moved him following similar struggles. Meanwhile, Wilson is a solid (if unspectacular) veteran who can provide dependable play at short as their new starter.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
A recent MLB.com report said veteran shortstop Wilson rejected the Pirates' most recent contract offer, so moving him here makes a lot of sense for Pittsburgh. Clement has an above-average bat, and while injuries (and Ryan Doumit) may keep him from being a regular catcher for the Pirates, he could push Steve Pearce for their first-base job soon. Clement and Cedeno (who may replace Wilson) are both one-time top prospects who are still young enough to pan out, and the three young arms (Pribanic, Lorin and Adcock) are all big, strapping pitchers with talent but each is likely years from the majors (although the first two are doing very well in the lower minors).
