GIANTS ADD SOUTHPAW LOPEZ
The San Francisco Giants acquired pitcher Javier Lopez from the Pittsburgh Pirates for pitcher Joe Martinez and outfielder John Bowker.
What does it give the San Francisco Giants
The Giants add a lefty specialist in Lopez, who adds some bullpen depth in the wake of injuries to both Jeremy Affeldt and Dan Runzler. It is likely that Lopez will take over Affeldt's setup role for the time being.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
Martinez is younger than Lopez, and he has some starting potential as well, so the Bucs cashed in on Lopez for a pitcher with more of a future. Bowker adds outfield depth, but he's no more than a fourth outfielder in the bigs.
