A's ACQUIRE SETH SMITH
The Oakland Athletics acquired outfielder Seth Smith from the Colorado Rockies for pitchers Josh Outman and Guillermo Moscoso.
What does it give the Oakland Athletics
The A's have lost several key veteran outfielders this off-season (Josh Willingham, Hideki Matsui, David DeJesus and Ryan Sweeney), so Smith is a nice veteran replacement who can help lead the young clubhouse. He's the type of player Oakland GM Billy Beane loves: a selective batter with a sweet swing and an underrated athlete. If Smith can prove he can consistenly hit lefties (something he had a tough time with as a member of the Rox), he may play regularly in left field.
What does it give the Colorado Rockies
With Michael Cuddyer signed to play right field, Smith became the odd man out in the Rockies' outfield rotation (so it's not surprising he was moved here). Neither righty Moscoso nor lefty Outman is very intimidating on the mound but both have proven they can start if needed, and be effective overall. Both should get some starts in 2012 regardless of whether they're rotation regulars, but neither is likely to be a standout (especially in their new ballpark).
