WHITE SOX LAND JAKE PEAVY
The Chicago White Sox acquired pitcher Jake Peavy from the San Diego Padres for pitchers Aaron Poreda, Clayton Richard, Adam Russell and Dexter Carter.
What does it give the Chicago White Sox
While the White Sox may hope to get Peavy in the rotation this year, that is anything but a certainty due to his sore right ankle. Regardless, getting a pitcher of Peavy's caliber for the future (he is signed through 2012 with a club option for 2013) is a coup for Chicago here. When healthy, Peavy is one of the top hurlers in baseball and, at 28, he is firmly in his prime. The price tag is steep in terms of salary and the White Sox gave up some very promising young pitchers (especially in Poreda), but it's rare to be able to bring in a perennial Cy Young-level starter via trade.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
The Padres are obviously in rebuilding mode and with the team nowhere near contending, keeping Peavy around was a very expensive proposition for the next few years. Poreda has the potential to be a dominant lefty starter eventually and Richard is a solid addition. Russell projects as a dependable reliever, while Carter has been dominant striking out batters in the low minors this season.
