MARLINS, MARINERS TRADE PITCHERS
The Florida Marlins acquired pitcher Arthur Rhodes from the Seattle Mariners for pitcher Gaby Hernandez.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
At 38 years of age, Rhodes has looked rejuvenated this season and
should fit into the Marlins' bullpen nicely. He began the spring
coming off Tommy John surgery, signed a minor league contract with
whomever would take a chance on him (the Mariners, as it were) and now
gets a chance to pitch for a contender down the stretch. Rhodes will
work alongside fellow lefty specialist Renyel Pinto in the Marlins'
pen, which means that Taylor Tankersley is headed back to the minors.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners
Hernandez is a nice return for Seattle, given Rhodes' age, expiring
contract, and the recent emergence of Cesar Jimenez as another
effective left-handed reliever in their bullpen. Originally acquired
by Florida in 2005 for Paul Lo Duca, Hernandez is still only 22, and
while he has struggled in Triple-A this season, he definitely still
has the potential to eventually be a mid-to-back of the rotation
starter.
