BOSTON ADDS BEDARD IN THREE-TEAM SWAP

In a three-team deal, the Boston Red Sox acquired pitchers Erik Bedard and Josh Fields from the Seattle Mariners; Seattle acquired outfielder Trayvon Robinson from the Los Angeles Dodgers, and outfielder Chih-Hsien Chiang from the Red Sox; Los Angeles acquired Tim Federowicz, Juan Rodriguez and Stephen Fife from Boston.

What does it give the Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox needed to add another starter and, after failing to land Rich Harden from Oakland due to medical concerns, they opted for lefty Bedard--just as talented as Harden, but almost as fragile in terms of his injury history. The BoSox are rolling the dice on the southpaw, but it's with high-reward potential also. Fields will add depth to the bullpen picture within the organization.

What does it give the Seattle Mariners
The M's were hoping to move Bedard all along, and wound up with two decent outfield prospects in return. Chiang, from Taiwan, has intriguing upside. Robinson has a lot of power but whiffs a lot as well. Both could eventually wind up in Seattle's outfield, since the club lacks offense in a big way. Maybe the M's could have gotten more for Bedard, but at least they went after players they needed.

What does it give the
The Dodgers surrendered only Robinson in this deal, and wound up with three players--including Rodriguez, who might become a great reliever down the road. Catcher Federowicz and Fife have a little less upside, but the Dodgers did well to receive three prospects for the price of one in sneaky fashion at the back end of this three-way deal.
